iOS 9 Public Beta 1 available now

iPhone ProvisionApple have just released the public beta of iOS 9 for those of you who just can’t wait until the official release. Unlike the developer beta of iOS 9, the public beta means you do not have to have an Apple developer account.. What’s more, you get the update over the air, and all future updates in the same way going forward. Signing up to the public beta program is pretty straight forward, once you’ve signed up all you have to do is download a provisioning profile on your iPhone, reboot then check for updates!

Obviously as this is a beta, is wise to try and avoid installing it on your primary hand set. Before you do so, its also wise to take a full backup of your device and it’s contents. Just incase you decide to roll back from the installation.

Once you’ve got your full backup, head over to beta.apple.com/profile on your iPhone. Once signed in with your iCloud credentials you’ll be presented with a ‘Download Profile’ button. Tap on this, accept the terms and conditions, and then follow the on screen instructions.

If you decide to roll back from iOS 9 all you need to do is connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac or, put it in recovery mode, and restore it to the backup you made before biting the bullet… You made a backup.. Right?? If not, you can use an iPSW from iOS 8 you can grab the relevant files from http://www.ipswdownloader.com

iPad Pro.. Could it be true?? 12.9″ with USB Support?

iPad Pro UserSince the day of release of iOS 9 power users and developers have been hunting through the code looking for clues relating to future hardware releases. One which keeps working its way to the top of the pile is that of the iPad Pro.. A 12.9″ iPad which is potentially going to feature a 2735×2048 resolution screen which equates to  263 pixels-per-inch, according to code found in iOS 9.

Some other things rumoured about the iPad Pro is that it will have:

  • Built in support for USB class C devices, including keyboards
  • Support for multiple user ‘profiles’
  • Stereo speakers (instead of the current mono speaker across the iPad range)
  • A9 Processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • Touch ID

A larger screen would certainly be welcomed by those users intending to use the new split screen functionality… Rumours are the iPad Pro will be aimed at (but not solely) business and education users.

Should this be true, I’d expect to see a release of this later on this year. Probably October in the Apple Keynote, based on the fact the iPad 2 Air was announced in last Octobers keynote.

The below is a link to hirakujira’s tweet, where you can see a screenshot of the code from iOS 9 and details of potential screen resolutions:

K33n Team working on iOS 9 Jailbreak

K33n TeamThe elite Chinese hacking group K33n Team (aka Keen Team) have announced that they are already working hard on a jailbreak for iOS 9, and hope to have it ready to release just days after the official iOS 9 release.

Liang Chen has been talking to Forbes reporters about their work on breaking 9, however they have highlighted how difficult they expect iOS 9 to be to jailbreak. Especially with iOS 9’s new ‘rootless’ security feature, which is rumoured to feature heavily in both OS X and iOS.

The Keen Team are a group of 12 elite hackers who, on the 13th of November, explioted Apple iOS 7.0.3 Safari within 30 seconds… Bagging them a haul of $30k! So it’s fair to say, if anyone can do it, they can!

Jailbreaking still divides the iOS user base, with some, itching to get more functionality from their devices.. Whilst others much prefer the safety and security of the solid Mobile OS.

Currently the only version of iOS with Jailbreaks available is 8.1.2, despite countless teams working on exploits for iOS 8.3 and 8.4 (due for public release on June the 30th).

If you can’t wait for the jailbreak to be released, check out what has to be the most up to date guide to jailbreaking on the net from the boffins over at Lifehacker.

Once you are free of the iOS ties and restraints, you could do much worse then checking out this list of 10 top jailbreak tweaks.

iPhone 6s to get 1080p front facing camera?

Rumour has it that an early iOS 9 adopter has discovered code lerking deep in the depths of the recently released OS, which suggests the next iPhone may actually have a front facing camera which will support 1080p!

If the rumour from Hamza Sood is correct, selfie takers of the world over will soon be overjoyed!

The code also suggests the introduction of a front facing flash too..

Good find Hamza.. Let’s hope this really is true, and the iPhone 6s gets the camera overhaul it deserves!

iOS 9 Low Power Mode testing

At Mondays WWDC, or the Worldwide Developers’ Conference, one of many things that Apple announced was the latest revision of its mobile operating system iOS 9.

iOS 9 is packed with a raft of new features, one of which specifically caught my eye. That’s the ‘Lower Power Mode’ setting which can be accessed through the all new ‘Battery’ menu option under the settings menu.

iOS 9 Low Power Mode

It’s fair to say I’ve been an iPhone fan ever since my very first iPhone 3GS (I skipped the 3!) and although I’ve never really found the battery life to be an issue, (mainly because I’m sat in front of a computer upwards of 12 hours a day) I have often willed that extra couple of hours out of my iPhone when out and about.. Now, being the ‘geek’ that I am, I always have a backup battery in my pocket. However, battery saving options like this are always more than welcome.  (more…)
