FVS offer hosted Exchange

Hosted ExchangeThe clever boffins over at Free Virtual Server head quarters have managed to land a fantastic deal for people just like you! New to the FVS portfolio is hosted Microsoft Exchange mailboxes! FVS have teamed up with a well known company in their field  MessageStream to bring you a 50GB mailbox which offers 24/7 accessibility on any platform. Served from the ‘cloud’ the service is fully resilient, which almost guarantees absolutely no time spent without your mail, contacts and calendar items..

A hosted exchange account is much more powerful then an IMAP or POP3 mailbox solution, which most hosting companies offer by default. Exchange mailboxes sync across a myriad of devices using Microsoft standards.

The FVS solution offers you:

  • Reduced IT infrastructure costs
  • Exchange 2013
  • Instant deployment
  • Massive 50GB per mailbox
  • Enhanced security
  • Mobile email ‘push’ technology
  • No upgrades or repairs
  • Shared calendars and contacts
  • Easy mailbox control
  • Public folders and subfolders
  • Instant scalability
  • Multiple UK Based Data Centres

All that starting from just £4.99 a month… You’d be crazy not to really! Whats more for only an extra £1 a month you bag yourself a licensed copy of Microsoft Outlook, which is by far the best application for keeping your mail and calendars organised.

If you’d to find out more check out the FVS website

FVS have been my (MikeSel.info) hosting provider since day of inception 8+ years ago.. They are always on hand to help out, knowledgeable, friendly and genuine guys.. I can’t go far enough in my recommendation of them. Worlds apart from other hosts in my opinion!

Switch OS X default Mail application

By default, OS X handles all mailto: and ‘send to mail’ actions with its built in Mail app. Which is fine… If that’s all that you use, however power users (or maybe corporate mac users with exchange servers) may want to use Microsoft Outlook (2016 actually not being all ‘bad’)

In order to switch the default action for mailing, it seems somewhat backwards, but you actually have to launch the Mail application!

Once the app has launched, click on the ‘Mail’ menu item and then click preferences. Right at the top of the pop up window you should see the option to select the default email reader. Doing this also associates the chosen app with all mail functionality in OS X.

Mail Preferences

You can of course, set up Mail to connect to and use a Microsoft Exchange mailbox. To do this, follow the instructions on the official Apple Support site

Microsoft Exchange System management tool – Windows 7

Despite the fact Windows 7 has been in circulation since before October 2009 there still appears to be no official support for the Microsoft Exchange System Management tools for the Active Directory Users and Computers Microsoft Console applet (dsa.msc).

Luckily there is a work around to enable the installation of Windows Vista Exchange System Management tools on Windows 7.

All you need to do is, download a copy of the MSI from here extract the contents to a folder of your choice, and then run the following from the command line:

MSIEXEC /IESMVISTA.MSI /Q

Doing this will prevent the MSI checking that you are running Windows Vista and should install without any issues.

Restarting Active Directory Users and Computers should enable the add-on and you should now see the additional tabs as pictured in the screen shot above.

Simple really!

Disable built in Windows Mobile 'Lock'

ActiveSyncIf you use Exchange ActiveSync on a windows mobile device which enforces that useless ‘lock’ facility on your phone. You may want to consider disabling it and finding an alternative.. No matter how many registry hacks I tried to switch off or delay the lock, it kept coming back. Now, I understand the reasons behind the lock being enforced. However I already use a 3rd party locking app for the phone, so wanted to use that instead.

After a long winded hunt around the internet I have finally managed to locate the perfect solution.

Firstly, you are going to need a registry editor for your device. You can download Total Commander here, once you have downloaded and installed total commander navigate to HKLMSecurityPolicies0001023 and change the 0 to a 1.

Now download Zenyee’s Stay Unlocked cab file here, once installed perform a soft reset on your device. Once it’s rebooted navigate to the lock applet in the settings folder, and switch off that annoying lock once and for all.

Don’t forget to install an alternative to the lock app, otherwise you may find you are in breach of your companies IT Security Policy.
If you know of an alternative way of doing this, get in touch using the comments box.
