Install and enable SNMP – Windows

During my Fluke OptiView Training, I decided I would switch some more features on in my Windows 7 VM to see what else the OptiView had to offer.  It was only then I realized my Win7 VM had SNMP installed but had not yet been configured.

If you want to install SNMP on your Windows 7 machine, firstly you will need to install the required networking services from the Programs and Features control panel applet.

Launch the applet, and choose Turn Windows Features on or off, scroll down the list and select the option labeled Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)

Now click Ok, you will see a progress bar on the screen, once complete close down the Programs and Features Applet, and launch Administrative Tools.  Now select Services, this will display a list of all the currently installed services on you machine.  Scroll down the list until you can see the SNMP Service.

Right click on the service and click Properties.  For this to work you will need to at least fill out the Agent tab, and Add a community name/String in the Security tab.

It really is as simple as that.
