The perfect Mac to Mobile Sync Solution?

SyncMateAs most of you will know, I am predominantly a Linux user, having to put up with Windows foibles through my work, and my ‘love’ of Windows Mobile devices. For the last 11 years I have seen little exposure to the whole Macintosh world. That was until Friday, when I wen’t out and purchased a 17″ MacBook Pro.

One of the first challenges I can across after installing Snow Leopard was to sync the data stored on my windows mobile. Now obviously I can sync the data stored in the file system using Mesh. However I needed to sync my contactstasks and calendar information. With Google sync not an option as my phone already has an exchange activesync connection.
After many hours of googling, I stumbled upon Eltima software’s website. Eltima offer a software solution called SyncMate. The powerful application boasts many features. The most appealing for me was the ability to manage the SMS folders of the device. On my windows boxes I had developed a bespoke application which did this. But of course am currently unable to port to Mac.
Eltima offer a free version of there SyncMate software which kept me entertained for the first 30 minutes, however I soon found my self upgrading to the expert version! Now I don’t think I could be without it.
On my phone (HTC Touch Pro) SyncMate uses a client which listens for connections via both USB and other my wireless network(s). Which works out perfectly for me. Allowing me to send text messages using my phone from a different room in the house. Which seems like a feature you wouldn’t find useful however, when my phone is docked upstairs charging I can be downstairs still communicating with my friends. Although I have not been using the application very long, its truly proving to be another everyday use app on my tool belt.
If you have used other Mac sync apps, and would like to suggest them please post a comment below.

Alpha release of RAPId SMS Desktop

Hello All

Recently I have been developing a desktop based text message application, which sends messages via an ActiveSync connected device to a recipient for your choice.

Although the long term plans are to enable the application to sendreceive messages from the PC, I have produced a temporary solution which I thought I would share.

This is just one part of the application, which is a ‘quick send’ solution.

Download and install RAPId SMS Setup and install onto your PC.

RAPId SMS is no longer available to download – thank you for your interest.

Upon loading, RAPId SMS will sync it’s local address book with the one from Microsoft Outlook, if you have a large contacts collection please allow time for the sync to take place!

Once it’s loaded click on the file menu and click install on device. This will download the latest mobile client of RAPId SMS, transfer the CAB to your device and start the install procedure.

Currently you MUST select to install the app on your device and NOT your memory card!

Known Issues:
Currently there are some performance issues with the desktop and the mobile clients, these will be resolved in future releases.

Known OS’s
This application has been tested on Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Home and Windows Vista Business
This application has been tested on Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 6

Please remember this is an ALPHA release and may contain bugs, the idea behind this release is to aid me in the design and development. Please only post constructive comments. If you don’t like it – then don’t use it.. I am also fully aware there are alternatives available. I am not interested in namelinks to these alternatives.

I would appreciate any constructive comments you have, and details of the mobile device you have tested this on.

If you would like to see any additions in this application, or the main application please let me know.

Thanks
Mike

Disable built in Windows Mobile 'Lock'

ActiveSyncIf you use Exchange ActiveSync on a windows mobile device which enforces that useless ‘lock’ facility on your phone. You may want to consider disabling it and finding an alternative.. No matter how many registry hacks I tried to switch off or delay the lock, it kept coming back. Now, I understand the reasons behind the lock being enforced. However I already use a 3rd party locking app for the phone, so wanted to use that instead.

After a long winded hunt around the internet I have finally managed to locate the perfect solution.

Firstly, you are going to need a registry editor for your device. You can download Total Commander here, once you have downloaded and installed total commander navigate to HKLMSecurityPolicies0001023 and change the 0 to a 1.

Now download Zenyee’s Stay Unlocked cab file here, once installed perform a soft reset on your device. Once it’s rebooted navigate to the lock applet in the settings folder, and switch off that annoying lock once and for all.

Don’t forget to install an alternative to the lock app, otherwise you may find you are in breach of your companies IT Security Policy.
If you know of an alternative way of doing this, get in touch using the comments box.
