Over the last several years I have been disappointed by plastic USB flash drives and the fact they all fail in the same way. Countless USB Flash drives have been lost simply by the plastic keyring loop breaking off, causing frustration, data loss and financial pain.

But now – thanks to LaCie’s Imakey this will now never be a problem for me ever again. Thanks to it’s award winning design the ‘Imakey‘ is designed to look like an everyday house key. Unlike cheaper alternatives the LaCie is built from key grade metal. Making it almost impossible to break.
As a heavy user, I chose the 16GB variation of the key, however it’s also available it 4GB and 8GB variants.
This not only fits perfectly on my car keys weighing in at just 14 g, but I can rest assured in the knowledge that LaCie’s Private-Public software is securing my private data.
The Imakey features a waterproof and scratch proof USB 2 interface (with a transfer rate of up to 480Mb/s), which works with almost every platform but can also be used with Windows® ReadyBoost®.
The ImaKey range is available direct from LaCie’s online store

Transcend 220Transcend USA have recently released an additional application for use with their JetFlash 220 secure storage devices. The JetFlash 220 is just like any normal USB memory stick, however – it has one extra little facility.. Built into the housing of the device is a biometric fingerprint scanner. The scanner protects a ‘private’ partition on the device which can only be unlocked with a swipe of the owners fingerprint.

I have been using my JetFlash device for years now, and I love it.. So I was quite excited to read about the latest addition to the JetFlash software. The JetFlash 220 Advanced Function tool adds an additional layer to the Windows logon process. After you have installed the tool and rebooted you will be unable to access your Windows based machine until you have swiped your finger over the biometric reader.
Biometric logons are not new, and have been around in high end laptops for many years. However – using the above solution offers a cheap and effective way of implementing such a facility on your entry level laptop or PC. The new software supports Windows 2000, XP (32/64 bit), Vista (32/64 bit) and Windows 7 (32/64 bit) and is available for free download here.

As websitespolicys call for tighter security and more complex passwords, a decent and secure place for storing all your account information is essential. There are many applications on the market, however not all of them are as feature rich as SPB Software’s wallet application.

The application was first released for windows mobile phones, an application which sync’s flawlessly with Windows desktop computers. This very rapidly made it’s way to one of my most used applications. Storing all sorts of logon credentials for PC’sServers and websites. Gradually building up to contain even more information, such as door lock codes, alarm codes and car VIN details.
When I moved over to my new phone (iPhone 3GS) i soon noticed just how much I missed the application. Luckily SPB Software have released a version for the iPhone. Which (like the windows version) boasts a large features list that power users will love.
Strong 256-bit AES encryption
Automatic wallet locking
Cards Flip Flow
Password auto fill for websites in web browser
Cloud sync with Google mailbox
WiFi sync with desktop computer
Start tags
Quick Search
Password generator
Desktop: User-friendly logon panel
Desktop: Automatic clipboard cleanup
You can purchase the windows version for $9.95£8.45 or the mac version for $14.95£13.95 from SPB Software’s website, you can also download the iPhone app from iTunes app store

CheckPointOne of the requirements of my new laptop was that it had to be able to connect into the remote sites I often connect onto. One of the applications I use for connecting to the networks is Check Points SecureClient..

Imagine my disappointed when I found out a Snow Leopard compatible version had not yet been released!!
However, I have managed to solve this little problem with the help of a blog post over at sysadmins-world.com

1. The Checkpoint installer refuses to install

The installer checks up for the Darwin Kernel version 9. In Snow Leopard we have version 10. So two files need to be edit within the installer package.

  1. just right click on the installer and select Show Package Contents. This opens finder within the package.
  2. go to Contents/Resources.
  3. open TextEdit, use vi in a shell or whatever you prefer to edit a simple file
  4. on file “InstallationCheck” change the number 9 in line 8 to number 10: if  [ “$MAJOR” != “10” ]; then
  5. same on file “postinstall “ change the number 9 in line 84 to number 10

That’s it. Just install it and reboot. Changes need to make afterwards in order to have it starting.

In the words of the mere cat… Simplez!
