Whilst at the Gadget Show Live today there was one stand in particular that caught my eye. It was 3′s in car Wifi device, and this wasn’t just because they used an A3 as the demo car!
Basically, the 3 network have released a 3G dongle which also acts as a wireless hotspot for in car surfing! The dongle (which costs £59.99) connects to the network and then shares the connection with any Wifi enabled mobile device. Providing speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps to Windows, Mac laptops and hand held devices.
The ‘Mifi’ dongle (Huawei E5830) is available in two different versions, a pay as you go module for the light users, or as a monthly contract for the heavy user.
The light user PAYG tariff is charged at £10 per GB which is valid for 60 Days. The contract plans start from 7.99 per month for 1 GB of data up to £17 a month for 5 GB of data.
1 GB of usage allows you to send approximately 1000 OutlookHTML emails, Surf the web for 10 hours, download 5 4 minute videos or download 32 4 minute MP3′s.
You can get your ‘MiFi’ device and contract direct from 3′s website

PowerstrapWhilst at today’s Gadget Show Live I took the opportunity to replace my previous portable power pack. My previous being the trusty Ted Baker battery pack, which unfortunatly is unable to charge my iPhone 3GS.

I managed to get me hands on a Powerstrap. As seen on five’s Gadget Show, and obviously at Gadget Show Live.

The Powerstrap is a portable battery charger built into a wrist strap. The wrist strap is made up of a soft foam, and features LED lights to indicate the current charge held by the power strap.

The strap had a single micro USB port on the site which is both the input and output for charging. Inside the strap is a 1500mAH Li-ion battery which is charged through the mini USB port via either a pclaptop or power USB adapter.

Once charged it can then be used to provide approximately 1.5 full charges to an Apple iPhone, and varying levels to other battery based devices depending on the draw required.

On the underside of the strap is a metal clasp and loop, sporting the Powerstrap logo. The strap is no heavier then a normal sports watch, but is a little chunkier. The strap also comes with a collection of cable adapters to provide support to many devices, and a ‘curly’ cable to plug into the strap. The strap has many possible uses, not just phones. But cameras, games consoles, games controllers and anything else you can get a USB cable for.

Being strapped to your wrist means you can quite happily play your games console without having to sit 2 feet away for a power socket. Perfect for the beach or pool side!

This is certainly going to save valuable pocket space and prevent scratches on my tech from sharing a pocket with a bulky battery.

The power strap is available to purchase from: Amazon at £38.99, you can find more information at Powerstrap’s homepage Powerstrap.co.uk

iPhone OS 4.0 coming soon

On April 5, 2010, in Blog, by

News has started to hit the various mediums about invitations to an ‘unveiling’ ceremony for Apple’s latest version of it’s iPhone operating system. iPhone OS 4 has been rumoured to contain may new features and exciting updates. However the only features actually confirmed to date have been a refresh of the home screen (what ever that may mean) and an update to the syncing of the calendar and contacts. There are strong rumours around the ability of multi tasking in OS 4. Which so far have not been fully confirmed. Multi-touch gestures will also be making an OS wide appearance..

As with all previous releases, peoples wish lists are vast, and no matter how good the release is there’s a good chance there will be a lot of disappointed users.
The update will only be released to iPhone 3G’s and 3GS’s, with iPod touch users having to wait that little bit longer for the possibility of a refresh!
Over the last few days Apple have send out lots of invites to the iPhone OS 4 event, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday. With the OS not being too far behind.
One things for sure, unless you never venture out onto the scary place that they call the internet, you are going to find yourself bombarded with information and new articles all about the OS between now and then.
Hopefully the servers will be able to handle the mass update traffic this time, not like when the first OS 3 update came out and they fell over under the load!
No doubt you will find me updating my phone as soon as the release is made public, and once done I will post my findings..
Until then, let the countdown commence to Thursday!

Luscious SMSLuscious SMS is a desktop based mobile phone communications management solution, aimed at those who send large volumes of text messages or who would just rather use their computers keyboard instead of the phones keypad.

Luscious is able to extract SMS message folder contents including your Inbox, Drafts, Outbox, Sent and Trash folders direct from your mobile phone using either bluetooth or a cable connection. It even supports Apple iPhones, and they don’t even have to be jail broken!
Luscious is capable of sending SMS messages direct through connected mobile phones….. UNLESS of course you have an iPhone, for which SMS sending does not work! Which is a major pain. However Luscious offers a solution to that issue, it’s capable of sending SMS messages through one of several free online SMS services, or through it’s own professional SMS gateway.
Luscious has an ‘in-app’ store allowing you to purchase SMS packages of 100 SMS messages at €10 each. Enabling easy cost control over your mobile messaging.
The application integrates seamlessly with the native OS X address book, even providing autocompletion of names. Allowing the fastest possible solution for text messaging! It also contains a built in mini address book where you can store contact groups for batch messaging.
Luscious has a feature rich and very liquid GUI interface, which doesn’t look out of place running next to my many other native Mac applications. Not only does it download all of the SMS folder contents, it also displays the senders name and not just the number. (unlike many similar applications)
The app is currently capable of supporting
Apple iPhone – SMS Receive
Sony Ericson Phones – SMS Send & Receive
Sagen Phones – SMS Send & Receive
With Nokia phone support coming soon!
If you are a Mac lover, and heavy SMS user then this app would be perfect for you!
To use Luscious you will need to be running Mac OS X 10.4 or later, and have either an active internet connection of a phone capable of supporting both send & receive from the list above.
You can download a 15 day trial version of Luscious from their website, and for a full version visit the ‘in-app’ store and purchase a license for €19.90

JiWire LogoThe clever boffins over at jiwire have recently released an update to their popular iPhone based Wi-Fi hotspot locator. The previous version was close to making it to my top ten list, but just had a little something missing.. This one however, really does seem to tick all the boxes for me!

The Jiwire hotspot finder boasts the listing of over 300,000 hotspots in over 140 countries, and with the ability to add hotspots direct from the app more are getting added daily.
Some of the app’s other features are:
The ability to search for hotspots anywhere in the world,
The ability to get Wi-Fi hotspot details and call the location, get directions or add to a list of favourites,
The ability to filter search results by free or paid, provider or location,
The ability to download the hotspot directory for offline use,
The ability to share your finds using twitter or facebook,
and even more. Check out this page for the remaining features.
The application is compatible with both the iPod touch and iPhone OS 3.0 or later.
I’ve found this app invaluable in the past when I am out with my laptop with an urgent email to send, and as iPhone tethering on the UK Orange network is astronomically priced i’m often stuck hunting down a hotspot.
Jiwire also offer an online wi-fi hotspot finder, which you can find over at their homepage.
If you know of a hotspot near by, why not help the growth of the already massive database by submitting it’s details here
