Researchers over at Palo Alto Networks and WeipTech have stumbled across a strain of particularly nasty iOS Malware, now dubbed as KeyRaider, because it raids victims’ passwords, private keys and certificates. (Just like “Lurker” and “Reaper”, Raider is also a unit in Blizzard’s real-time strategy games.). The Malware is believed to have been written to harvest device IDs from jailbroken Apple iOS devices. Although the strain has only yet been seen in the wild inone of Chinese cydia repositories, Weiphone, where it’s believed to have successfully lifted 225,00 IDs, thousands of certificates, private keys, and iTunes and AppStore receipts from infected devices!

It was first discovered by device owners when they noticed unauthorised purchases on their Apple accounts, and shows no signs of infection on the device itself.

Devices believed to be infected are in the following 8 countries China, France, Russia, Japan, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Germany, Australia, Israel, Italy, Spain, Singapore, and South Korea.

The Malware uses MobileSubstrate to latch onto low-level system process and then go on to steal Apple account usernames, passwords and device GUID when the device is hooked up to a computer and syncing with iTunes.

WeipTech go on to say that the idea behind the Malware is to enable unscrupulous users from using stolen account credentials for making purchased in Apple’s online stores. Its thought that over 20,000 user have already started abusing the stolen 225,000 stolen credentials!

If you do decide, or have already jailbroken your phone – you need to ensure you only download packages from trusted repositories. Although this is only known to inhabit one repository currently, theres’s a good chance that this, or similar malware strains will spread to other cydia repositories. Especially if it proves as fruitful as it has to date.

There’s currently no way, besides users discretion, to protect against such iOS infections. This is largely due to the fact that software is unable to perform background OS level scans on iOS. Which is something which is unlikely to change in the near future.

Apple TVPosts have started hitting the net, suggesting the latest in the Apple TV will actually be running iOS 9. However, its believed to be a version specifically optimized for TV. This may not come as a surprise to many, as rumours have been circulating for some time suggesting the latest hardware will be focusing on game play and Apps. This should hopefully give the aging device a new lease of life, many have lost faith in the Apple TV system as its seemingly been left at the road side as Apple focus more on their other hardware.

Its believed Apple will ve unveiling the new hardware at the September event on the 9th. However, there’s no idication yet of pricing or availability. One things for sure, it may be hard pressed to compete with hardware such as Amazons fire stick which sports an impressive £35 price tag.

Its believed the new Apple TV will have Apple’s A8 chip at its heart, which should be more then capable of powering even the most demanding iOS Apps and Games. Along side the more powerful chip, are many rumours of a remote sporting a touch pad. Wheather this will support force touch or not is yet to be seen.

Something which may take the shine off the release for early adopters is that it’s believed Apple have not managed to finalise the deals to enable their all new TV Streaming services. Although they all still in the works, so should hopefully be along shortly after the launch..

SWORD COAST LEGENDS

Independent developers, n-Space and Digital Extremes, announced today that their upcoming Sword Coast Legends™, a party-based RPG set in the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) Forgotten Realms universe from Wizards of the Coast, will offer Head Start Access for PC, Mac and Linux players. Starting September 11th, players can try Sword Coast Legends™, prior to the game’s release on September 29th.

We at n-Space have always intended for our pre-order customers to have a chance to try out the game prior to its September 29th release, said Dan Tudge, President of n-Space and Director for Sword Coast Legends. To that end, we are announcing the details of Sword Coast Legends’ Head Start access program.

Head Start will have three planned sessions, he adds. The first is scheduled for the weekend of September 11th through 13th and will be available only to members of the Design Council – those that pre-ordered one of the Limited Edition Collector’s or Campaign Collector’s packs. The second will run September 18th through 20th, and will be open to all pre-order customers. These first two sessions will focus on the Dungeon Master modes of Campaign Creation and Dungeon Crawl. In order to avoid spoilers, the Story Campaign will not be available at this time. The third session will run September 24th through the game’s release on September 29th and will once again feature the Dungeon Master modes for all pre-order customers while Design Council members will also have access to the Story Campaign. PC, Mac and Linux cross-platform play will be supported.
In each of these sessions, players will mingle with n-Space, Digital Extremes and Wizards of the Coast team members. To be included in the Head Start program, players must have linked their game purchase to an account on SwordCoast.com. Access details will be sent to the associated email account starting the week of September 11th.
