Get paid to shop with Quidco

On June 29, 2011, in Blog, by Mike Hudson

So generally as a rule I don’t tend to ‘buy in’ to these types of sites, offering cash back deals for doing normal shopping.. However when I moved into my new apartment I wanted to switch energy providers, and I new that Quidco had an offer of £80 cash back to switch to one of the major providers. So I thought I really have nothing to loose. I went ahead with the switch, honestly thinking nothing would come of it – and I have recently received my £80 cash back. That’s right.. I know it sounds too good to be true, but it honestly did work. Granted it took ages for the claim to process… But it’s £80 for doing nothing I wasn’t doing anyway!

Last night I did some online shopping, and then checked Quidco for a voucher code, sure enough there was one – I used that and got a percentage of my spend back. Again I was buying the items anyway – so it made sense to use it.

Unlike the recent internet boom of Groupon, Quidco offers savings on day to day items. Check it out, you’ve nothing to loose!

Enable 2-step verification for Google accounts

On June 26, 2011, in Blog, by Mike Hudson

Seemingly everywhere you turn just recently everyone is implementing 2 factor/2 step verification, this is essentially a second step required to enable you to access normally password secured sites and services. Everything from your bank account to your web based email will shortly be secured using these new methods.
Each service has it’s own way of providing this second layer of security, your work VPN may have a code generating token\keychain, your bank may have provided you with a calculator and Google are now providing codes to your mobile device which you can use.
Each of the major services will hopefully contact you to set up your 2nd layer. For your Google accounts, you should be able to enable it now by visiting this link
It’s a good idea to enable this as soon as possible to prevent unauthorised access to your account.

Tired of seeing this window pop up, and having to enter your password every time you use an app? But don’t want to open up all your apps for use?

Here’s a nice and easy fix for you, launch the Keychain Access application (/Applications/Utilities/Keychain Utility) locate the entry relating to the application you want to always allow. In this case, it’s Microsoft Messenger for Mac, double click on the entry to bring up the details window:

Now, select the “Allow all applications to access this item.” click on the save changes button, and enter your password when prompted. You should now find you will no longer be prompted to enter your password when using this application.

NB: The above method comes with it own pit falls, obviously this will now allow anything to have access to this keychain data without prompting you. Bear this in mind when you are authorising items.
